Sunday April 16, 2023

Over the last few weeks we have been looking at what it means to be a “House of Prayer”. But let me ask you a question, Why are you praying? What is the desire in your heart? How do you want to see God move? This week we will look at Romans 10:13-15. Is there someone that you need to be praying for that needs Jesus? My hope is that as we navigate through this passage, you will realize that Jesus is talking to you. He has called you to pray for the lost and to help lead them to the only one that can help. Oswald Chambers said "Prayer does not fit us for the greater work; prayer is the greater work.” Will you pray with me this week because prayer will only happen if we are truly Broken and if we are passionate about what only God can do. The true worth of a man is to be measured by the things that he pursues. See You SUNDAY!!

WHY DO WE PRAY?

Why do we pray? This is a great question to ask ourselves. Last week we looked at the idea that “without communication there is no relationship”. We understand that we need to pray to have a relationship with God. We also understand that we pray when we need something. But what would it look like if we prayed because we want to be prepared for what lies ahead.

This week I want us to focus on Ephesians 6 and understand that we are in a war every day against spiritual forces.
How will you pray this week? Will it be in a moment of need, or will you pray to be prepared for that moment of need? May you pray daily for God to prepare you for what He has in store and for the attacks that may come as you live for Him.

We often go through our week thinking about God and reading His Word, but do we spend a lot of time seeking the Lord through prayer? In “Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire” Jim Cymbala said “No matter what I preach or what we claim to believe in our heads, the future will depend upon our times in prayer”.

I want to challenge you this week to dive into your time with the Lord by “Seeking Him in Prayer.”  As we begin this journey to prepare ourselves for a new pastor through the Transitional process we must begin with prayer. In Psalm 139 David encourages us to Search out the Heart of God. Let us Search for Him through our prayers this week as we begin this process.

Pastor Jeff Bachman

The book I referenced in this message is "Superbia: The perils of pride. The power of humility." This new release is written by my good friend and Trinity's very own Dr. Steven Willing.  Combining cutting edge research with a consistent Biblical world view, I have never read (indeed, it may not exist) a more thorough, well written, and accessible exploration of pride and humility.  I can't recommend it enough.  If you think 'I don't need to read a book on pride', trust me, you do.  I did.

Questions for reflection and discussion:
  • What are some common things we say as Christians about which we should ask “Just what do we mean by that?”
  • If a friend told a friend about your faith in Christ, and they asked “Why do I need to be forgiven? Why is it so important that Jesus ‘died for my sins?’“ What would you say?
  • Why is a good understanding of sin crucial to a deeper understanding of forgiveness?
  • How is sin about more than ‘morally negative thoughts and actions?’
  • Read Romans 14:23.  How is lack of faith a sin? What are specific examples in life? Are there things that might be sin for someone and not for you? Vice versa?  How could this principle be distorted?
  • Read Genesis 3:1-7.  In your words, what is the essence of original sin portrayed here?  Pastor Ethan said “At its core, sin isn’t about ‘what/who is right’, but ‘who is God?’”  Do you agree? Why is this distinction important?
  • Discuss Pastor Ethan’s ‘working definition of sin’.  Do you agree?  How does seeing sin as a ‘violation of God’s Love’ shed new light on what sin is?  Does this change the way you think about sin? Can you give a practical example?
  • How does this concept of sin expand our understanding of forgiveness?  Why is the concept of redemption so important to understanding forgiveness?
  • How is God’s gift of redemption and forgiveness powerful in our lives today?
